If you want to get serious about running, here are 3 tips

I was talking about a friend who is getting serious about running and asked me advice since I ran 3 marathons (which is nothing compared to the one marathon per week my friend Scott Dunlap runs, you should read his blog!)

I don’t know about advice but inspiration from those two really great books:

What I talk about when I talk about running

Born to run

and I followed the Chi Running technique to learn how to not hurt myself. It might sound a little weird but that really helped me a lot.

oh, and I really like the Newton Shoes which are totally flat but still protect you very well for long distance.

    Hi Loic,
I plan to run a half marathon by july and then, why not begin training for the full one after.
Is that allowed to listen to music when running ? It’s can be very motivating !

    All the best
    Alex

Hi Alex I never listen to music during races because there is already so much for your senses around, other people running, people cheering you up that I prefer listening to that, especially at the NY Marathon

Those two books are great and they are must for any runner. A couple more I also enjoyed a lot are:
    Once a Runner http://amzn.to/I6w9hG
Again to Carthage (sequel to the previous one) http://amzn.to/K2COWz

They are fiction, but running is the center theme on both of them and they are very well documented. Trully inspirational…. maybe too much. I injured my Achilles heel because of too much running while reading them :)

    Thanks Fernando will read them!

I’ve already experienced that, it’s crazy when people cheer up. It’s almost like they are giving us some of their energy.
I listen to music during training because I didn’t encounter someone cheering me up in the streets ^^

When is your next marathon ?

Interesting tip on the Newton shoes. I’ll definitely try them out. Been a huge fan of vibram 5 fingers as they have truly changed my entire running style and love for running but my feet really start barking after around the 8-9 mile range.

one quick question Loic… Checking out the Chi Running site you linked and saw their Correct Toes product. Have you tried that with the Newton shoes or heard about anybody that has? Seems like a great way to create that more natural landing style that the 5 fingers promotes while running in a better long distance shoe.

Greg that’s my experience too. The newtons goes are totally flat but their cushion provides the solution for long distance

I have not tried that, I did their basic 2 hour training that really helped me not injuring myself ever as I did not hit the ground the same way ever, but duno about the rest

Awesome, thanks Loic. I’ll check out the 2 hr training program – always looking for ways to make running easier on the body.

that’s what I did, the 2 hour program, and it changed my running completely.
