Le Putois (the Skunk) is a French pop-rock group who made a song
denouncing the politics of Nicolas Sarkozy, a right-wing candidate
for the next presidential elections in France. The son of a Hungarian
immigrant, his real name actually being Nicolas Sarkozy de Nagy-
Bocsa, he is currently Minister of the Interior. George W. Bush
recently gave him a very warm welcome in Washington.
On June 13th 2006, Nicolas Sarkozy de Nagy-Bocas took a decree aiming
at regularizing the status of an « undefined » number of immigrants
without papers. Most of the children of these immigrants were born in
France, where they go to school. In France, the right to nationality
based on the place of birth can only be claimed over eighteen, under
the condition of a sufficient number of childhood years spent on the
French soil. Thus, a foreign child born on the French soil will not
be granted automatic nationality. Many people (33548 adults)
volunteered in giving their name and address to the police, in the
hope of getting a regularization of their situation. Only 6924 *
adults did get it !
Every week, whole families are in danger of being sent away from
France, along with their children who go to school in France and were
born on the French soil.
This situation is unworthy of the country of the Human Rights.
Today in France, the number of people without papers in an irregular
situation ranks between an estimation of 200 000 to 400 000 **.

6924 were regularized, i.e. 20,64 %
26614 were turned down, i.e. 79,35%
** estimation made by Dominique Galouzeau de Villepin, currently
Prime Minister, when he was still Minister of the Interior, very
recently.

Vous trouvez pas un peu prématuré de parler de Web 3.0 alors que le 2.0 émerge à peine ? C’est un peu “people” (traduisez pipeau) non la conf. de LLM ?

J’essaireais d’être là l’année prochaine

C’est redondant de féliciter Loic pour son Davos du Web. Je me concentre plutôt sur les surprises de Le Web 3.0. Le plus surprenant a été dee découvrir que malgré toute l’amitié qui lie Loic et Nicolas Sarkozy, Sarko a été complètement éléphant ce jour dans son discours concernant internet et quasiment hué. Qui plus est, il est le seul politique, voire le seul intervenant à être parti sans accepter une séance de questions — en bon ministre français. La jeune gazelle, et il y en avait une, n’était ni Ségolène qui n’est pas venue (connait-elle mieux ses limites?), ni Bayrou qui passait son temps à disputer la traduction (il n’avait qu’à parler en anglais à cette conf internationale), mais l’octogénaire Shimon Pérès qui a fait un discours sans notes, absolument extraordinaire. Il a expliqué pourquoi et comment les nouvelles technologies sont la voie du salut de la planète. Allez vite écouter son discours sur leweb3.com. Bravo Loic pour Shimon Peres.

You seem to have upset your audience a bit with the Sarkozy invitation at the last minute. Although I agree the presence of presidential candidates is an exciting possibility and adds a new diminesion to your conference,it does seem take away a little bit of the more personal “5eme republique” sentiment. Can you honestly say that Sarkozy accepted his invitation beforehand, or was he not notified earlier? It seems to me like it’s too easy of a plan – making sure that Sarko would appreciate the acceptation while Segolene was occupied elsewhere, making her look bad. The whole thing seems to have turned against Sarko, though.
In any case, congratulations on the result of what was a lot of hard work, I’m sure! I would be curious to see what you’re response to people’s French posts will be in the next few days. Might be time to catch up on those in-depth, more personal, analytical posts to calm the uprising.

Following on Alicia last comment, let’s keep in mind that LLM was this weekend attending a political roadshow organized by the political party of Sarkozy to open an internal debate between Sarkozy and other non-declared opponents.
There is very limited chance (hummm.. let’s say 0.005%) that this manipulation was not planned. LLM has fouled his audience and his not being very sincere about that.

If it’s any consolation Loic, these things blow over so quickly. Sarkozy’s presence had a lot of consequences that, had you seen them coming, you would have preferred to avoid – even if it meant less PR for the event. I know I wouldn’t have seen all of this coming.
You do the best you can with the chances you have, and you can’t control everything that happens.
Recognize the discontentment, keep your head up, learn from it, and move on. “tout credibilite” isn’t lost, on the contrary it may be a chance to prove yourself by responding in kind.
in the end, people just want recognition that they’ve been heard.

what a shame this whole story is. it says in the subtitle of this blog “blogs start conversations”. why do you stop the conversation at this very crucial point? the insult to sam sethi is unbelievable, after he posted a pretty balanced view on the conference. the way you seem to have fooled the conference’s attendees is unbelievable, too. time to speak up if you wanna save any of your reputation!

The attendees are calling out to have a conversation. And the only word you can manage to conjure up is “asshole”.
Come on, the conversational media is here – so why not talk to us dissenters?

Loic, if you read this, I think you could use the fact that your blog is bilingual. Just ignore the big bullshit that has become the French half of it as a result of an incredible amount of irrelevant comments, and apologize here: this is where people who care about this expect it.
I’m sure you know that we French have that reputation (especially in the U.S.) to always reduce everything to our own little concerns and I think that your invitation of French politicians at this international conference on an international topic has furthered this negative perception. For the sake of a future conference in France, whether or not you’re the one organizing it, please leave a word of explanation here.

because to some extent the use of English prevents the kind of BS that’s going on in the French half of this blog. Also because most people criticizing Loïc in French tend to do the same thing they criticize: bring everything back to a franco-french debate/issue. People who read this half of the blog are not as tense and heavily politicized (I think), they will just care about a simple, well-argued explanation and apology for what’s happened at Le Web 3. They could care less than hearing more from or about Sarkozy.

La crtique est aisée, mais l’art est difficile !!! AH ! combien c’est vrai chez nous !
A partir du moment où l’on fait quelque chose, on prend un risque, tous ceux et celles qui agissent ne le savent que trop !
En revanche, l’inverse est tellement vrai, tous ceux et celles qui ne foutent rien (imcompétence, absence d’idée, médiocrité et autre …) ont tout le temps nécessaire pour critiquer, dénigrer, rabaisser … c’est normal ils n’ont que cela pour se sentir exister et tout le temps pour le faire !
Mais en attendant, la caravane passe, avance, progresse et laisse sur le bas côté tous les aigris et autres frustrés, incapables de suivre le mouvement …..

I don’t know if most the people posting here are French native speakers, bit just have a look at what’s going on in the comments to the last post in French on this blog… And it’s not a matter of the comments over there being more politicized but they just have turned into pure trolling bullshit.

yes, Loîc has apologized in the past, always for the same thing (insulting someone), and always in the same way (I was exhausted). It’s happened no later than two days ago in the Sam Sethi story (although it should be noted Loïc’s apologies didn’t give same his job back…). I agree that apologizing for bad decision making in general and the invitation to French politicians in particular would be something new. But we can still hope he’ll do it.
Come on Loïc, the more you wait, the more credibility you seem to give to critiques that are not all well-founded.

Un débat ? où, où ça un débat ??? pas vu dis donc !!!
Non, ce n’est pas une question de langue, ni même de politique, c’est beaucoup plus grave, c’est un problème de mentalité. On ne débat pas ici, on monologue notre médiocrité et aigreur, on ne cherche pas à dialoguer, mais à avoir raison, alors si c’est ça un débat, on est mal barré !!! Pour qu’il y ait débat, il faut déja s’ouvrir à l’échange, connaître le sujet, chercher à comprendre, argumenter … (je pense que la pertinence des arguments de garmon n’aura échappé à personne !!!) et malheureusement, on en est bien loin encore, mais bon …. faut pas désespérer ! Allez Loic, courage, tu as le soutien des hommes et femmes de bonne volonté !!!! ha ha ha
